Professor Thomas Arnold,
a Cambridge scholar of Islam of the late nineteenth and early
twentieth centuries, authentically describes the peaceful spread of
Islam throughout the world. From Arabia, Islam spread to North
Africa, interior of Africa, Andalusia, India, Indo-China, and indeed
all of parts of the known world of the time. The Orientalists,
medieval polemicists, missionaries and the modern media all argue
that Islam has been spread by the sword. In the current media war
against Islam, Muslims and Arabs, the violent images of Islam is
projected and stressed again and again. Unfortunately, these
illogical and politically motivated assertions go unchallenged even
now, it is at this stage that Tawasul Centre for Research and
Dialogue has undertaken the republication of the classic work of
Professor Arnold. Arnold was an independent and highly sympathetic
scholar of Islam who knew both Islam and the West thoroughly. Backed
up by a rare scholarship into the history of the peaceful spread of
Islam, Arnold proves that it was not the sword, but the beauty of
Islam, the exemplary character of its early followers, the oppressive
social condition of the people ad Islam’s universalistic teachings
that helped to spread Islam. The book is not just a presentation of
the events but a critical look at them supported by numerous
historical documents in Latin and other languages. It also contains a
biographical sketch of the Prophet (peace upon him) as a presenter of
Islam, along with meditations on Islam.
